Have you ever had the idea of creating an infinite and photo realistic ocean in 3D with a simulated boat driving through it? If so, this is the perfect course for you. In this course, Houdini: Intermediate Ocean FX, you'll learn how to setup a procedural ocean and do a flip fluid simulation for the boat. First, you'll discover how to use the ocean spectrum to create an infinite ocean. Next, you'll add the boat, do a flip simulation for a specific area with high detail, and add whitewater and mist. Finally, you'll extend the simulated area and setup the shaders to render all the layers. When you're finished with this Houdini 16 course, you'll not only have an ocean rendered with a high detail fluid simulation, but you'll also have a workflow on how to master your own ocean and fluid challenges in the future. Hi everyone, my name is Andreas Giesen and welcome to my course Houdini Intermediate Ocean FX.

I am working as a FX Supervisor at Rise Visual Effects Studios, where I worked on feature film like Captain America Civil War, Avengers 2 and Cloud Atlas.

Ocean and Fluid simulations, especially in a large scale, require many different steps and a proven workflow to get to a realistic result.

As this is definitely one of the most challenging tasks for an Effects artist it will extremely useful to have these skills in your arsenal.

In this course, we are going to setup a procedural ocean and in the second part we will do a flip fluid simulation with withewater for our boat.

Some of the major topics that we will cover include:

  1. Creating a realistic and infinite ocean surface
  2. Simulating Foam for the ocean and rendering it
  3. Setting up a flip fluid simulation
  4. Simulating Whitewater and Mist with Custom Forces
  5. Extending the Simulated Ocean and Rendering it with Displacement
By the end of this course you will be ready to master your own Houdini ocean and large scale fluid challenges.

Before beginning the course you should be familiar with the basic concepts of Houdini and you should also have some simulation experience.
